Many people associate St. Patrick’s Day with beer drinking and the colour green. In fact, St. Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday that commemorates the death of Saint Patrick more than 1,000 years ago (he was a Christian man brought to Ireland to work as a slave at the age of 16). Saint Patrick is widely believed to be the person who first introduced Christianity to the Irish people, and he famously explained the Holy Trinity to his followers using the three leaves of the Irish clover, the shamrock. Even though St. Patrick’s Day has been a religious celebration for many centuries, it wasn’t until the 1600s that the first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in North America. According to historical records, a Spanish speaking community in Florida, USA hosted a St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1601. The popularity of St. Patrick’s Day parades grew in the 1700s, but the green colour associated with modern day St. Patrick’s Day didn’t come into existence until 1798. Prior to 1798, the Irish wore blue, not green, on St. Patrick’s Day! During the Irish Rebellion of 1798, the British wore red and the Irish wore green and sang “The Wearing of the Green”. From that point on, the annual celebration of St. Patrick’s Day has always involved the colour green. Thanks to beer advertising from brands such as Budweiser in the 1980s, modern St. Patrick’s Day is also strongly affiliated with drinking and a fun night out with friends.
