Modern Weddings Are More Fun!

According to Country Living magazine, weddings from a century ago were simple but less fun than modern weddings. While modern weddings often take place in a church, a park, or a restaurant/food venue over the weekend, weddings from a century ago often take place in the family home on a weekday. Back then, there was even a rhyme to help brides remember how to choose the best day for the wedding. The rhyme told the bride that “Mondays were for wealth”, “Tuesdays for health”, and “Wednesday the best day of all” but “Thursdays for crosses, Fridays for losses, and Saturday for no luck at all”. Imagine how a bride from the early 20th century would react if she discovers that most couples nowadays get married on Saturdays! As well, most North American weddings from a century ago were modeled after the English tradition, which meant the wedding reception took place at noon during lunch, and a reception in the evening was very uncommon. In fact, until the 1960s, most couples got married in their own home in the middle of the day in the presence of their parents and other family members. The couples who chose to do a reception after their wedding ceremony kept the affair very simple. Guests at these receptions were often served “cake and punch” and they would not have been presented with full-course dinner, drinks, and evening entertainment. Back in the day, family members of the couple would help out the couple during the wedding ceremony and reception (if any), and it was not fashionable to hire an event planner or wedding designer. Now that you get a glimpse into what weddings used to be like, would you prefer the fun-filled (but more expensive) modern wedding, or do you envy the less costly traditional wedding?
