According to Forbes magazine, the very first popsicle was invented by a man named Frank Epperson in San Francisco, California. In 1905, when Frank was only 11 years old, he left a container of soda pop with water and a mixing stick outside on a freezing cold evening and discovered the next day that his accidental creation tasted really good! Epperson went on to sell this invention, which he named the “Epsicle”, in 1923. Many years later, Epperson’s kids finally persuaded him to patent his invention under the name “Popsicle”. Today, the popsicle is simply a generic term for flavoured ice on a stick and they come in many different flavours. Gone are the days when the popsicle only came in soda pop flavours! Market research conducted in recent years show that most consumers in North America prefer popsicle brands that are environmentally friendly and socially responsible in the making of their products. Low calorie and vegan popsicles are growing in popularity in grocery stores as consumers become more health conscious about what they eat. While there are many popsicles that still come in traditional fruit-based flavours like oranges and strawberries, some popsicle brands have opted for a more “grownup” taste with flavours like “latte” and “oat milk”. To attract customers who follow the latest wellness trends, some popsicles are even infused with beneficial ingredients like Vitamin C, probiotics, and collagen. Buzz Pop, a very popular popsicle brand, currently sells boozy popsicles like Chocolate Raspberry and Blueberry Mania infused with rum, bourbon, or tequila. At some upscale grocery stores you can even find salty or spicy flavoured popsicles! Outshine, for example, is a premium popsicle brand in the US that sells a mango, chilli peppers, lime, and salt flavoured popsicle.
