What’s Your Favourite Cocktail Ice?

Did you know that different cocktail drinks require different types of ice? Standard ice cubes that measure approximately 1 inch by 1 inch are the most frequently used type of ice in cocktails. These cubes tend to fit into most types of cocktail glass and they take longer to melt due to their thicker surface, which means drinks could retain their flavours longer. Bartenders will use these standard ice cubes for drinks that are either shaken or stirred. Larger ice cubes that measure 2 inches by 2 inches are only used in drinks that require shaking as they melt too slowly for drinks that are stirred. A cocktail that requires fine whiskey or scotch would pair well with these bigger ice cubes because they melt very slowly and would take nothing away from the flavour. Crushed ice, on the other hand, is used for drinks like Frozen Daiquiri because it gives it a slushie-like texture. A drink made with crushed ice tends to be more refreshing but the flavour of the alcohol also tends to be weaker since the melting ice would dilute it. Drinks like Gin and Tonic and Mojito would often come with a long block of ice (known as the “Collins Spear”) instead of ice cubes because the long shape of the ice block looks pleasant in in the taller glasses that are served with these cocktails. As well, the ice block would take nothing away from the flavour since it would require a long time to melt. Most interestingly, some cocktail drinks found at bars are served with white smoke that’s created by dry ice. This type of ice is most commonly used in bars and not in the home because most customers would find it hard to make and handle dry ice at home (it requires temperatures to be below -78.5 degrees Celsius). The smoky, special effects created by dry ice is often used in Halloween themed drinks but they are also perfect for fancy cocktail hours so many customers will ask for this at their favourite bars and restaurants.
